  “No. I’m fine. You can take the scotch too. I’ve tortured myself long enough.” He slapped a ten on the counter.

  She dumped the scotch down the drain and set the glass in the dishwasher under the counter, noticing his mood lifted now that the ritual was over. A glance at the clock told her it was midnight, no longer the same day as his sobriety anniversary.

  “You can count on it,” Mike agreed. “Have a good night.” He slid a hand into Aria’s and the two of them headed down the back hallway to leave through the rear entrance.
